William "Billy" Harrington, III

Mr. William “Billy” Dalrymple Harrington III, 73, of Broadway, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023. He was born in Lee County, the son of the late William “Bill” Dalrymple Harrington Jr. and Mildred McLeod Harrington. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his wife of 35 years, Janice Stewart Harrington.

Billy was a 1968 graduate of Boone Trail High School where he played multiple sports. He was voted basketball’s “Most Valuable Player” by the county coaches his senior year. He also played in the state championship tournament that year. After graduation, he attended Methodist University where he received his BS degree and continued his love of playing basketball.

Billy taught Social Studies at the NC Correctional Facility for Youthful Offenders in Harnett County for several years. He then owned and operated his own trucking company before joining Food Lion, where he was employed until his retirement. 

Billy was an active member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church where he served on various church committees, including the Trustees. He was also a member of the Chancel Choir.

Billy had a special love for the beach, music, and sports. He enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends as his favorite pastime. Billy loved music and was the lead singer and guitar player in a band during his younger years. Sports were always a passion for him. He loved NASCAR, specifically Dale Earnhardt, golf, and his all-time favorite, Duke basketball.

Billy was a friend to all who knew him and never met a stranger. He was always smiling and doting on his grandchildren, who aside from William, brought the biggest smiles to his face. He especially enjoyed the time he spent babysitting Olivia and Liam.

Billy is survived by his son, William Dalrymple Harrington IV, and wife, Nikki of Raleigh and grandchildren, Olivia Cate and William “Liam” Dalrymple Harrington V; brother, Barry Harrington and wife Pam, of Garner; brother, Jimmy Harrington and wife Jackie, of Broadway; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a host of special friends.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 29, 2023 at Spring Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Doctor Bobby Rackley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Prior to the service, the visitation will be held from 1:00-2:45 PM and other times at the home, 2016 Lloyd Stewart Road Broadway, NC  27505. The service will be live streamed on the Spring Hill United Methodist Church Facebook page.
