Mr. Robert (Bob) Manuel Garrett, age 89 of Broadway, NC, took his final breath Saturday night (09/10/22) at his home surrounded by loved ones. Bob was born in Mebane, NC, son of the late Harvey Hocutt Garrett and Grace Cheek Garrett. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son Mike Garrett.
Bob graduated from Mebane High School in 1951, attended the University of North Carolina and Graduated from Burlington Business College. He honorably served in the Navy from 7 June 1951 to 15 June 1954 and was a Veteran of the Korean conflict. While in the Navy Bob served on special assignment with the Atomic Energy Commission at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands and participated in “Operation Castle Bravo” which was the most powerful nuclear device detonated by the United States. He was one of last surviving Atomic War Veterans.
Bob was an avid businessman who managed several branch locations for First Citizens Bank & Trust Company and rose through the ranks of Home Finance Group of Charlotte. He retired as the Regional Vice President of Champion Home Builders where he served 25 years. He served on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Manufactured Housing Association, Lee County Board of Equalization and Review and Lee County Environmental Board.
Bob had a passion for cars and loved the classics with big V-8’s and lots of chrome. He enjoyed traveling and visited many parts of the world on both business and leisure. Bob enjoyed the company of others and put much emphasis on visiting family and friends. Once you were a friend of Bob’s you were a friend for life. He loved carrying on conversations and debating the topics of the day.
Bob is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Elizabeth (Libby) O’Quinn Garrett, son Steve Garrett, daughters Michelle Spencer and husband William, Colleen Brueck and husband John, Tammy Lawson and husband Ricky, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday September 18th at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church, 2300 Mt Pisgah Church Rd, Broadway, NC 27505, Rev. Doug Houston officiating.
