Robert Chaffin Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE – Robert Johnson Chaffin, 93, of Heritage Place, 325 North Cool Springs Street, Fayetteville, N.C., died Sunday, May 30, 2021, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.

Mr. Chaffin was born August 27, 1927, in Harnett County, NC. as the youngest son of Leonidas Martin Chaffin, and wife, Alda Johnson Chaffin, both of Lillington, N.C.

Mr. Chaffin graduated from Lillington High School in Lillington, NC, and attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC, Oak Ridge Military Institute in Oak Ridge, NC, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC.  Mr. Chaffin served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II, and further in the United States Army following his college career.    

Mr. Chaffin’s professional career was with Commercial Credit Corporation in Lumberton and Fayetteville, Cross Creek Savings and Loan in Fayetteville where he was an officer and director, and with East Coast Federal Savings and Loan in Fayetteville.

Mr. Chaffin was a former member of the Administrative Board and Trustees of Camp Ground United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, and was a life-long loyal member of the church.  Mr. Chaffin was also a member of Creasy Proctor Masonic Lodge No 679 AF&AM in Fayetteville, NC, Fayetteville York Rite Masonic Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple in New Bern, NC, and Cumberland County Shrine Club.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Chaffin was preceded in death by his brother, Leonidas Martin (Tom) Chaffin, Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.

Mr. Chaffin is survived by his sister, Helen Chaffin Byrd of Lillington, NC.

Mr. Chaffin will be remembered as an avid fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, the Atlanta Braves, and Holden Beach, NC.  He will also be remembered for his quick wit and humor, and his many charitable contributions including those to Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC, and Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. 

A graveside service in memory of Mr. Chaffin will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington with the Reverend Sang Park, pastor of Camp Ground United Methodist Church officiating.  Due to inclement weather Mr. Chaffin's service will be held at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Chapel.  

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
