Ray Coates, 81, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on May 16, 2025 — his 61st wedding anniversary — with his beloved wife, Ellon Coates, by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ray lived a life rooted in faith, family, and farming.
Born May 1, 1944, in Johnston County, North Carolina, Ray spent nearly his entire life in the Fuquay-Varina area, where he became a pillar of his community. From a young age, he was drawn to agriculture, growing up on a family farm and taking an active role in FFA (Future Farmers of America). That early connection to the land would guide his career and shape his character.
Ray spent most of his working life managing John Deere dealerships, where he became well known and loved by the farmers he served. To many, Ray was more than a salesman — he was a trusted advisor, a loyal friend, and a fellow steward of the land. His knowledge, honesty, determination, and genuine care left a lasting mark on the farming community he served with pride.
Ray was also a man of deep Christian faith. A dedicated member and deacon of his church, he led with quiet strength, humility, and compassion. His faith guided every part of his life — from how he served others to how he loved his family.
Above all, Ray cherished his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellon Coates, who remained his steadfast partner in life and love. Together, they built a legacy of devotion and strength that continues in the generations that follow. Known affectionately as “Papa,” Ray was a beloved grandfather who found joy in grandkids, great grandkids, hunting, working the land, staying in touch with his close friends and customers, coaching sports and gathering with family and friends — often telling stories that will not be forgotten.
Ray is also survived by his sons, Shane Coates (wife Sonya) and Daniel Coates (wife Tracy); grandchildren Josh Baker (wife Heather); Tristan Moorer (husband Jordan); Austin, Ryan, and Brooke Coates; Jordan Miles (husband Anthony); Casey Ellis (husband James); and Seth, Hunter, Daniel, and Zach Coates; as well as 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Clee Coats and sisters Sarah Blissit and “Johnnie” Felts.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Coates Baker; grandson, Jacob Coates; sister, Jane Hamilton; and brothers, Jerry and Harvey Coats.
Ray’s presence will be missed deeply by all who knew him — his family, his church, and the farming community he served so faithfully. His legacy of faith, hard work, kindness, and love will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home in Lillington. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 22, at Piney Grove Chapel in Angier. A graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Fuquay-Varina.
In honor of Ray’s life, his family invites all who knew him to join in remembering a man who truly embodied service to others through a strong Christian faith.
