It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved Mary "Nanny" Hughes (1933-2024) at 91. On December 21st 2024, Mary went to be with her husband Baden & the Lord while surrounded by her daughters. As I compose this and sort through all of the photos we have collected over the years, I become very emotional. I tend to forget what an integral part of our lives, Mary had been. She epitomized what everyone's concept of a grandmother should be. She was selfless, caring, nurturing, loving, humorous and there whenever you needed her. Those who knew her adored Mary for her charming Scottish accent, snappy wit and her kind heart. From attending our children's ballgames, taking trips with us, celebrating holidays, having the fireplace ready to burn when I arrived home from work to helping us with all of the house hold chores, Mary never allowed moss to grow under her feet. She was a favorite at the Boscov's department store in Frederick, Md. as she loved to chat with the sales clerks there. Although we are never prepared to become caregivers I want to express my admiration to my wife Tina for her devotion to her parents. Mary and Baden moved with us in in 2010 and as their health declined over the years, Tina's resolve became stronger. From taking them to their doctor's appointments and eventually caring for all their daily needs including bathing, dressing and feeding, Tina put her life on hold. How she did this day in and day out for the last 6 years astounds me. I also wish to thank Tina's sisters Debra Rocco and Heather Hughes for coming and caring for Mary & Baden so we could sneak away for a well needed respite. Mary leaves behind 3 daughters, Debra, Heather & Tina. Son in laws Joseph Rocco and myself, 6 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. Her husband Baden and son Gordon preceded her in passing. This world lost a wonderful and inspiring woman who would drop whatever she was doing at a moments notice to help any of her family. There was many a day where she would roll up to our home in a huge pickup truck, her head barely visible over the steering wheel, bringing gifts for the children. She lived and breathed for all of her family. We were blessed to have her in our lives for so many wonderful years. I will miss you Mary and hope Baden was waiting with open arms.
