Marian Thomas Obituary

Marian Frances Thomas, 88, of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully, Monday, January 29, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. Marian was born July 17, 1935, in Anderson, SC to the late Hubert and Gussie Ussery. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Ussery; daughter, Martha Ruth “Susie” Cox; and grandson, James Robert Page.

A dedicated civil servant of 38 years, Marian worked with the Department of Defense while supporting all branches of the military. Also known as “Miss Marian” she honorably served for 34 years as the Commander’s Secretary for “The Unit” where she faithfully supported the organization's first thirteen commanders. Miss Marian was lovingly known as “The First Lady of Delta Force” and often described as “a guiding beacon”. She was a profound patriot where her commitment and presence were a force we all aspire to.

In addition to a successful career, Marian valued family and God above all else. A wife of 70 years, mother of 5 children, grandmother to 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, & 2 great-great grandchildren, Marian was a true matriarch of the Thomas Family. While soft spoken, she was described as never knowing a stranger; a calming presence in the darkest of storms. Though some might joke she couldn’t even spell a curse word, she was a force to be reckoned with and would do what was needed for her family. Even with her passing, her knowledge, commitment to what is right, and love and duty to God and country will live on in those who were fortunate to know this powerful but tender southern belle.

Marian touched many lives because of her willingness to be God’s hand while she was here on earth. She is survived by her husband James “Bill” Thomas; daughter Sandra Page; sons James Thomas (Vilma), Mike Thomas, & Tim Thomas (Michelle); grandchildren Michelle Cunningham (Matt), Cassandra Page, Leia Trudeau, Philip Trudeau (Amber), John Trudeau (Linda), Ashley Marsh (Ron), David Cox, and Adam Thomas (Krista); great-grandchildren Taylor Page, Tyler and Katelyn DeMace, James and Justin Bradford, Jeffery and Olivia Cunningham, Dylan, Bryleigh and Philip III Trudeau, Aubrey, Hannah, Tyler Thomas, Olivia Marsh and John Thomas Trudeau; great-great grandchildren Andre and Drevion Ratliff and Olivia Marsh.

The family will receive friends from 1pm-2pm on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Church, immediately followed by the funeral service at 2pm with Rev. Tom Cox and guest pastor Joane Phipps officiating. The burial will occur after the service in the church cemetery. Refreshments to be provided after services.
