Kenneth Ashley Stewart, 82, of Buies Creek, NC, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side, on Saturday, August 2, 2025. He was born on November 27, 1942, in Harnett County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ashley E. Stewart of Buies Creek.
Kenneth graduated from Buies Creek High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Campbell College in 1965. Immediately after college, he began his career working for Cumberland County Schools as a Guidance Counselor. He served his last few years as the Guidance Counselor at Pine Forest High School where he retired after 35 years of service. Kenneth was very active in his community. He joined Buies Creek Fire Department in 1964, taking after his father who was a charter member since its inception in 1956. During his 61 years of service, he served as President of Buies Creek Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors for many years and was currently serving as Vice President. He was a longtime member of Buies Creek First Baptist Church and served on several committees. For his service to his community, Kenneth was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine on March 17, 2022.
Kenneth enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his yard, watching westerns, reading history books and playing golf. He often showed his support for his alma mater, Campbell University, by attending various sporting events. He was an avid golfer and a member of Keith Hills Country Club for over 40 years where he made many lifelong friends. His love for the game of golf carried over to his son and his grandsons.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Veronica Fowler Stewart, his son Kenneth A. Stewart, II (Jennifer), grandsons, Logan Stewart (fiancée, Lanie Norris) and Addison Stewart; sister, Brenda S. Edwards of Buies Creek; brother-in-law Terry Fowler (Carolyn) of Murfreesboro, NC, and sister-in-law Regina Smith (Ronnie) of Dunn, NC and several special nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home, 1310 S. Main Street, Lillington, NC with burial to follow at Buies Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
