Kenneth Hill Murchison, Jr., 92, of Lillington, NC, passed away so very peacefully with his loving family by his side, on 24 June 2026 after a short illness. Many in the community knew him only, and most respectfully as, “Mr. Hill.”
Mr. Hill was born on 28 Dec 1933 to Kenneth Hill Murchison, Sr. and Pauline MacKay in Bunnlevel, NC. After graduating from Lillington High School in 1952, he went on to serve his country as a radio operator and nose gunner in US Navy P2V Neptune anti-submarine aircraft during the Korean War. He was a decorated combat veteran.
Kenneth Hill Murchison, recently from the Korean War, then joined the US Air Force. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth Lee Byrd of Lillington, NC, at the Bunnlevel Presbyterian Church, on 23 Dec 1958.
After 20 years of faithful service to the nation as a missile and nuclear weapons specialist, Mr. Hill retired from active duty in the military on 8 Aug 1972.
The family returned to their home in Lillington, NC in 1972. Mr. Hill spent the next 23-years working for the NC Department of Corrections during which time he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Special Studies from Campbell University in 1978. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 1996.
Mr. Hill was predeceased by his parents Hill and Pauline Murchison of Bunnlevel, NC, his brother, John MacKay Murchison of San Juan Capistrano, CA, and sister, Katherine Murchison Stewart of Bunnlevel. He is survived by his loving wife of 67years, Elizabeth Byrd Murchison, and two sons, Edward Betts Murchison (Diana) and Kenneth Scott Murchison (Lynn) all of Lillington, and sister, Elizabeth Murchison Brand of Charlotte, NC.
Mr. Hill cherished his family and especially his grandchildren Scotty Murchison (David Bond) of Los Angeles, CA, Tyler Murchison (Nicole) of Lillington, NC, and Erin Murchison Mulenex (Chris), of Wendell, NC.
He adored his great grandchildren Colby Elizabeth Murchison, Grant Russell Murchison, Rhett Hill Murchison, and Lowen Sirena Mulenex.
Visitation will be at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home, 130 S. Main St, Lillington, NC, 27546, on Friday, 26 June 26, from 5:00pm-7:00pm.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lillington Presbyterian Church, PO Box 245, Lillington, NC, 27546 on Saturday, 27 June 26, at 11:00am. Flowers will be accepted; however, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lillington Presbyterian Church Children’s Playground Fund, or the Harnett County Food Pantry, PO Box 2084, Lillington, NC, 27546.
