John Reginald Newtown

Mr. John Reginald Newtown, 83, of Lillington passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. John was born in North Bangor, NY, the son of the late Reginald Newtown and Selina Barber Newtown. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen Oakes, Clara Coty, Marie Murray and brother, Clayton Barber. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.

John worked at the Reynolds Metals Aluminum plant in Massena, NY until he retired due to his health. John loved to fish and hunt. John also enjoyed restoring old cars and spent many hours with his grandson working on a 69 Buick Wildcat convertible. John enjoyed showing his old cars and parading his granddaughters in the Lillington Christmas parade. John was a carpenter by trade, and he helped many friends and family with their remodels, including remodeling his own home here in Lillington. John was always there to lend a helping hand and was only a phone call away when his kid’s needed advice on home and auto repairs.

John was a faithful Christian that served his Lord by giving to others. John was humble with a kind-hearted soul; he had a contagious smile that would brighten anyone’s day. John will be truly missed by his family and friends.

John is survived by the mother of his children, Sheryl Prue of Pinellas Park, FL; daughter, Shari Coleman of Pinellas Park, FL; son, Michael Newtown and wife Wendy of North Bangor, NY; daughter, Jeanette Messenger and husband Kevin of Hartsville, SC; son, Douglas Newtown and wife Maria of Phoenix, AZ; son, Patrick Newtown and wife Brandy of Bunnlevel; twelve grandchildren, Brent Newtown, Theresa (Robert) Hopkins, Nathan (Jordan) Crandall, Brittany Newtown, Scott Messenger, Austin (Paige) Helms, Ryan (Caitlyn) Jones, Jonathan (Courtney) Messenger, Miranda Messenger, Jessika Newtown and her fiancé Ryan Sharp, Ronan Newtown, and Kallie Newtown; 12 great-grandchildren, Chloe Newtown, Belle Newtown, Amelia Newtown, Jase Messenger, Dylan Hopkins, Brynn Messenger, Graycon Helms, Ezekiel Messenger, Mia Jones, Tynleigh Messenger, Caleb Hopkins, and Stetson Jones; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM Thursday, November 3, 2022 at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Chapel with Rev. T.J. Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
