Hewitt A. "Buddy" Brown, Jr.

Mr. Hewitt A. “Buddy” Brown, Jr, 78, of Buies Creek passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021, at his home. He was born at Ft. Bragg, the son of the late Hewitt A. Brown, Sr. and Martha Edna Gregory Brown. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Ann Brown, and his brothers-in-law, Jimmy Parker, Preston Barbour, and Kenneth Hawley.    

A graduate of Campbell College and East Carolina University, Buddy began his teaching career in Harnett County. He continued his career in Cumberland County, first as a teacher and later as an administrator and athletic director at Douglas Byrd High School. Buddy was a lifelong member of Buies Creek First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and as a Sunday school teacher for the college class and the special adults class. He served on many committees, coached the ladies’ church softball team, and played on the men's team.

Buddy enjoyed North Carolina, Harnett County, and especially Buies Creek history. He will be remembered as the Buies Creek historian. In addition to local history, Buddy—the son of a WW1 veteran—was drawn to the history of the war. He was also an avid collector of comic books, particularly Uncle Scrooge.  

Buddy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda Parker Brown of the home; daughter, Amity Brown and son-in-law, Simon Kelly of Cary; granddaughter, Ailsa Jo Kelly of Cary; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Barbour, Bonnie Johnson (Billy), Janet Parker, and Vickie Hawley; brother-in-law, Billy E. Parker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Buies Creek First Baptist Church with Dr. John Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Buies Creek Cemetery. Masks are required at the funeral.

Friends are invited to visit O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home on Tuesday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to pay their respects to Mr. Brown. The family will not be present during this time.
