George Phillip "Phil" Johnson, Jr.

George Phillip “Phil” Johnson, Jr., 89, of Erwin, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington, NC after battling very poor health. 

Phil was born May 23, 1935 in Washington, D.C. to the late George Phillip Johnson, Sr. and Ruby Babcock Johnson.  He was raised in Maryland before moving to Erwin where he lived for over 60 years.  He was a veteran of the US Army and worked as a transmission mechanic in Lillington for many years before retiring to work from home.

Phil loved music and singing and played many instruments over the years.  Until poor health did not allow, he joyfully served in his church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Turlington Johnson; daughter, Nina Athey; sons, Worth Snipes, Allen Snipes, and Keith Snipes.

Phil is survived by his daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Jones and her husband, Donald; son, Terry Snipes and his wife, Linda; daughters-in-law, Nancy Snipes, Janice Snipes, and Diane Snipes; sisters, Joanne Stubbs and Phyllis Plenderleith and her husband, Ian; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. 

A funeral service will be held 11 am Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Erwin Chapel PFWB Church, 135 Erwin Chapel Road, Erwin, NC 28339 with Rev. Danny Helms officiating.  Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends 10 am – 10:45 am prior to the service at the church. 

Since Phil loved his church and faithfully gave his tithes, in lieu of flowers we request that any gift in his memory be made to Erwin Chapel PFWB Church.

The family would like to offer a very special word of thanks and appreciation to the staff, physical therapists, nurses, and CNAs that attended to Mr. George during his stay at Lillington Health and Rehab.
