Eunice Jean (Stewart) Humke

Eunice Jean (Stewart) Humke, 90, died Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, NC with her family by her side. Jean was born September 19, 1933, in Harnett Co., NC to Watson and Mattie Stewart. She loved to watch and play sports and was an active athlete from a young age through her adult life ‘retiring’ in her late 40’s after playing many years in a women’s softball league. She was an example that women could have a family and other passions, too. She graduated from Boone Trail High School in 1951 and went straight into the workforce working in factories before retiring in 1995 from Magneti Marelli USA in Sanford, NC. Jean was known for being a good worker and took pride in her job. Jean married William ‘Bill’ Humke on December 3, 1958 and they lived in Germany for the first 2.5 years of their marriage. Up to that time, the furthest she had ever been away from home was Myrtle Beach, SC. That experience broadened her world and was important to her until her final days. Jean and Bill were married over 27 years before he passed on July 7, 1985. They had three girls: Cynthia, Billie and Cheryl. Jean was an amazing and loving grandmother. She was also an active gardener loving being outside and working in her yard. She was a long-time member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church and loved her community and large Stewart family. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Humke, Billie (Bert) Goodman, and Cheryl Humke Young, her granddaughter Madison Young, surviving sisters, Cleta Thomas, Shirley Patterson and Edith Cayton, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and her four sisters and five brothers. Jean will be especially remembered by her thoughtfulness, her determined spirit and always being there to support her family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11am Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Spring Hill United Methodist Church with Pastor Bobby Rackley officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends 10am - 11am prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607 or Spring Hill United Methodist Church, 1960 Spring Hill Church Rd, Lillington NC 27546
