Elizabeth Byrd Obituary

Elizabeth Tysinger Byrd died Sunday, June 13th. She was born March 30, 1928 in Harnett County, North Carolina to the late Willis Oscar and Alda Stephenson Tysinger. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Waymon Weaver Byrd; an infant daughter, Connie Lynn Byrd; and siblings, Gene Tysinger and Joan Johnson. She is survived by daughters Gale Byrd Compton (King) of Lumberton; Julie Byrd of Angier; Wendy Byrd Buchanan (Chuck) of Meadows of Dan, VA; granddaughters Cayce Compton Taft (Marshall), Emily Wilbourne Satzger (Rob), Colleen and Molly Buchanan; great-grandchildren Madelyn and Lela Taft, Graham and Philip Satzger; and her sister, Martha (Larry) Bedsole.

Elizabeth (Lib) was a dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She and Waymon were inseparable helpmates throughout their marriage; completing many projects together, including the building of their own home in Buies Creek which they accomplished with the help of community members on the weekends. She was an accomplished homemaker, cook (caramel cake and sourdough bread), seamstress (her children’s clothes, Halloween costumes, wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses) and crafter (basketry, Ukrainian eggs, and decoupage). She enjoyed camping in the mountains and trips to the beach with the family. She and Waymon began an annual family beach trip. “Byrds on the Beach” continues today after twenty-seven years.

She and Waymon were charter members of Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek and served in many of its ministries. They delivered Meals on Wheels after their retirement. Lib loved to garden and was a member of the Buies Creek Garden Club.

Lib earned an associate degree in library science from Wake Technical College and served Campbell University undergraduate and law libraries. She and Waymon commuted together to Fuquay-Varina High School where she was assistant librarian until her retirement.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Buies Creek Cemetery on Judge Taylor Road. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers at Windsor Point in Fuquay-Varina and Transitions LifeCare of Wake County.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Baptist Church at PO Box 485, Buies Creek, NC 27506, in support of their community missions.
