Mrs. Christine Whittington Matthews, 96, of Lillington passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Emerald Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lillington. She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of the late Jody and Rena Williams Whittington. In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas “Tommy” Morgan Matthews and Shaw Fish; son, Mickey Matthews; siblings, Garland Whittington, Stacy Whittington, Fonzer Whittington, Agatha McLamb, Preston Whittington, Philip Whittington, Billy Whittington and Marie Honeycutt; granddaughter in-law, Laura Yarbrough.
Christine’s number one priority was her family. She exemplified her love for family by caring for her husband, Tommy, daily for 11 years following a severe automobile accident. She enjoyed a career working in the library at Campbell University and retired after many years of service. Christine loved to dance, especially line and ballroom dancing well into her 90’s. One of Christine’s greatest loves was working in the yard and picking up pinecones as they fell. She was a long-time active member of Lillington Baptist Church where she was a member of the Sara Womble Sunday School Class.
Christine is survived by her daughter, Gloria Yarbrough and husband Jerry of Buies Creek; son, Tony Matthews and wife Debbie of Dunn; daughter, Sherry Rice and husband Jerry of Star; 6 grandchildren, Jason Yarbrough and wife Christie, Jody Yarbrough, Morgan Matthews, Allison Matthews, Matthew Rice and Aaron Rice; 4 great grandchildren, Jackson Yarbrough, J.T. Yarbrough, Ashton Yarbrough and Cash Yarbrough; brother, McKinley Whittington and wife Margaret of Coats; many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 AM Friday, November 15, 2024, at Lillington Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Roger Moss and Rev. Daniel Selman officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Angier.
