Charles Howard Hood

Mr. Charles Howard Hood, 82, of Lillington passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at his home. He was born December 22, 1938 in Harnett County, the son of the late Charles Herbert Hood and Cleo Eula Veal Hood. He worked for the Harnett County Board of Education in the Transportation Department as Cost Clerk/Accountant for 33 years and later in a similar position at Campbell University for 7 years. He also served as Lillington volunteer firefighter for 23 years.

Howard graduated from Lillington High School in 1957 where he was a school bus driver.  In his senior year, he was awarded first place in the North Carolina School Bus Rodeo in that statewide event.  He was also a star catcher on the high school baseball team and was offered college scholarships to continue his playing career.  He continued his education at UNC-Chapel Hill and later joined the North Carolina National Guard. 

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and the outdoors throughout his life. He had a lifelong love of sports and of watching his two children play their chosen sports throughout their high school and college years.  He was proud of his grandchildren’s talents and was supportive of them in all their activities.

Sometime in the 1960s he found and purchased a 1954 Farmall Cub tractor, and he used it in his vegetable garden throughout his life.  Tinkering with his old tractor, plowing his garden with it, and seeing his plants grow were some of his favorite activities.  

Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dottie Gail Gregory Hood of the home; son, Charles Howard Hood, Jr. and wife Annette of McGees Crossroads; daughter, Crystal Hood Thomas and husband Billy of Lillington; 6 grandchildren, Hannah Hood D’Andrea, Charles Hunter Hood, Lillie Marie Hood, Lucas McCain Poole, Maggie Abbygail Poole, Emerson Rose Thomas; 2 great-grandchildren, Lena Mae D’Andrea, Ezra James D’Andrea; 2 brothers, Glenn Hood and wife Ann of Jefferson and Robert “Bert” Hood and wife Patty of Lillington.

A private funeral service will be held for the family on Monday with a burial to follow in Harnett Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home on Sunday, January 10, 2021, between the hours of 12:00 PM- 5:00 PM to pay their respects to Mr. Hood. The family will not be present during this time.
