Charles "Charlie" Howard Butts

Mr. Charles “Charlie” Howard Butts, 83, of Lillington passed away Monday, December 8, 2025. He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late James Hartwell and Madge Grey Royal Butts. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia Ann Faircloth Butts and stepson, Kenneth Dale Brown.

Charles was a veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1961-1965. He was a licensed pilot for many years and enjoyed anything aviation. Charles was a tractor enthusiast and loved working in his garden. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charles traveled many places to listen to Christian and Bluegrass music. He was a long-time member of Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers where he enjoyed travelling and fellowship with the Happy Travelers group. Charles spent time camping and spending time with his family at the beach.

Charles is survived by his wife of 18 years, Nancy Carol Butts of the home; daughter, Lisa Ann Retz and husband, Chris of Raleigh; son, Michael Butts of Carthage; son, Thomas Matthews and wife, Katie of Mt. Airy; step daughter, Melissa Brown Parker and husband, Curtis of Dunn; grandchildren, Grey Retz, Amanda Plotz, Nicholas Brown, Lauren Brown; great grandchildren, Ian Plotz, Landon Plotz, Kenley Plotz, Alyssa Kasselman; brother, Larry Butts and wife, Nancy of Sanford.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 AM Friday, December 12, 2025, at Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the church sanctuary with Pastor Todd Moore and Pastor Dan Deaton officiating. Burial will follow at Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington.
