Mr. Charles A. Upchurch, 91, of Broadway passed away September 29, 2022. He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late Frank C. and Alberta Collins Upchurch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two daughters, Donna U. Patterson and Melanie U. McLeod; grandson, Charles Marcus Patterson; brothers, Edward, Cecil, Franklin, Harold and Bryant; sisters, Ada, Jeanette, Mary Eunice and Joann.
Charles was a hard worker and loved to garden. He enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with friends and neighbors. He loved animals, especially his coon dogs. In his younger years, he was a baseball player on the B’s team. He was approached by a scout for the N.Y. Yankees and was famous for his grand slam at Campbell College. He chose the love of his life over a professional baseball career and began growing his family shortly after. Charles worked as a painter at Saco-Lowell, Siemens Allis, and Trion. He was also a farmer for many years. He loved the beach and spending time with family. Charles loved his family unconditionally. Our hearts will have a void until we see him again.
Charles is survived by his wife of 70 years, Betty Maxine Patterson Upchurch of the home, daughters, Karen Thomas and husband Randy of Lillington, Charlene Harrington and husband Randy of Broadway, Paula Arnold of Southport, Jennifer Blalock, and husband Larry Joe of Broadway; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brothers, Durward, Bennie, and Ray Upchurch; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Broadway with Rev. Scott Yow and Rev. Jerry Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorials may be made to Holly Springs Baptist Church, 385 Holly Springs Church Rd., Broadway, NC 27505.
