Mr. Bobby Byrd, 87, of Lillington passed away Wednesday, May 04, 2022 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. He was born April 3, 1935 in Harnett County, the son of the late James Edward Byrd and Bertha Wilson Byrd Dennis. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Byrd, Bernice Byrd, Jerry Byrd, and Herman Byrd. Bobby graduated from Boone Trail High School in 1955. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. Bobby worked in the maintenance departments of several manufacturing facilities in Lee County. He loved to play golf, fish, and watch Carolina basketball. Bobby enjoyed attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s ball games. He was an active member of the Boone Trail Ruritan Club for many years. Bobby was also a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers where he served as a Deacon. He enjoyed helping with the Wednesday night meals and assisting with Meals on Wheels.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 64 years, Melba Hawley Byrd of the home; daughter, Susan Currin and husband Timmy of Lillington; son, Reggie Byrd of Lillington; 5 grandchildren, Amy Currin Barefoot and husband Jonathan; David Currin and wife Victoria, Kevin Byrd and wife Jessica, Lauren Bain and husband Matthew, Lindsay Byrd; 6 great-grandchildren, Gavin and Grant Barefoot, Harrison and Grady Bain, Carson Currin and Bobby Byrd; sister, Hazel Byrd Thomas of Greensboro; brother-in-law, James Hawley of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Carol Hawley of Falls Church, Virginia; many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 6, 2022, from 2:00-2:45 PM at Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers. A funeral service will follow in the sanctuary at 3:00 PM with Rev. Rick Beacham and Rev. Dan Deaton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
