Angus Thomas (Tom) Shaw entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, March 11, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.
Tommy, as he was know by his family and friends, was born on September 27, 1946 in Fayetteville, NC to the late Angus D. and Ernestine Thomas Shaw. He was the grandson of the late John T. and Mary Ann Bain Shaw of Harnett County and Walter M. and Mattie Rogers Thomas of Broadway, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marianna Hannon Shaw of the home. He is also survived by his son Bryan and wife Angel of Sanford, NC and his son John David and wife Emily of Simpsonville, SC. He is survived by grandchildren: Devin Jordling, Ashlyne Shaw, Hailey Shaw, Lilianna Shaw, Jonah Shaw, Karmity Waddell, Ruby Shaw, and Evie Shaw; 8 great grandchildren and several in-laws, cousins and a host of friends.
He Grew up in Harnett County, where he graduated from Anderson Creek High School and graduated cum laude from Campbell University in 1968. Tommy began a teaching career that lasted for 34 years. He taught in the Fayetteville City Schools, Cumberland County Schools and finished his teaching career at Western Harnett High School. He was selected as Harnett County Teacher of the Year during the 1997-98 school year. Besides teaching, he was an accomplished pianist/organist and choral director. He served as Director of Music at Village Presbyterian and Peace Presbyterian Churches, both in Fayetteville and was Director of Music at Flat Branch Presbyterian Church in Bunnlevel, NC for over 28 years. He was also Organist/Choir Director at Lillington United Methodist Church and served as interim organist at Lillington Baptist Church. This avocation spanned 50 years. In addition to teaching and music, Tommy organized tours to all areas of the United States, Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. One of his most memorable trips was to his ancestral Isle of Jura Scotland where he met direct relatives from his Shaw family line. Over his lifetime he served many organizations: Board of Directors of the Heart of Harnett Theater, Harnett County Arts Council, Founding member and Vice President of the Anderson Creek High School Alumni Association, Deacon and Elder in the Peace and Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Churches. He was one of the founders of the Shaw Family Reunion of the Torquil and Ann Shaw family of Harnett County. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest civilian award for service to education and the community in 2010.
In 1992, he began to feel the effects of a rare neuromuscular disease, Kennedy's Disease or Spino Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. For years he faced the ever increasing challenges with faith and fortitude. He was a living encyclopedia of his family tree and authored several booklets detailing family history. It was often said "if you need a family-tie question answered, ask Tommy".
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday, March 14th from 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Sunday, March 15th at 3 pm, with burial in the Flat Branch Church Cemetery.
