Mrs. Agnes “Tiny” Mangum Austin, 89, of Angier passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at her home. She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of the late Rufus and Mavie Mangum. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie Austin, brother, Calvin Mangum, and sister, Mazelle Stephenson.
Agnes graduated from East Carolina University in 1956. She worked for several years as a home economics teacher and then transitioned to the Harnett County Department of Social Services. After being a stay-at-home mom, she went back to work with the literacy program at Central Carolina Community College.
Agnes enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Pleasant Union Christian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and the Harnett County Homemakers Extension Club.
Agnes is survived by her daughter, Karen Austin Thomas and husband Roger of Raleigh; son, Bobbie David Austin and wife Michele of Angier; 2 grandchildren, Meredith Thomas Doble and husband Wes, Rachael Thomas both of Raleigh; 2 great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Ellie Doble of Raleigh; sister, Rosa Lee Lasater of Lillington; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 9, 2023, at Pleasant Union Christian Church from 1:00-1:45 PM. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary with Dr. Greg Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
