Rev. Walter Sawyer Jones, Sr. 81 of Buies Creek died Friday, January 14, 2011 at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. A native of Pasquotank County, he was the son of the late Bluford and Mary Lou Sawyer Jones and was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldridge and Ray Jones. A graduate of Campbell College and Wake Forest University, he received his BA degree in Psychology. After graduation, he continued his studies at Southeastern Theological Seminary. Rev. Jones was active in North Carolina and Virginia serving as pastor for several churches in those states before retiring as Director of Missions of Columbus Baptist Association in Columbus County where he served for 18 years. Following retirement, he served as interim pastor for 6 churches throughout North Carolina. During his tenure as a minister, he was active in numerous capacities including service on the General Board of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and the Board of Ministers at Campbell University. He was also a member of the Buies Creek First Baptist Church. Rev. Jones was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict.

A memorial service will be conducted 3:00 pm Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Buies Creek First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Simmons and Rev. Harold Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

A graveside service will be conducted 4:00 pm Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Buies Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the J.W. Pope Convocation Center Building Fund, c/o Campbell University, PO Box 26, Buies Creek, NC 27506.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years,Lorrine Troyer Jones; Sons,Walter S. Jones, Jr. of Boykins, Va.; Douglas C. Jones and wife Deborah K. of Buies Creek; 3 Grandchildren: Walter Lee Jones, Jonathan Douglas Jones, and Rebekah Christine Jones; Brother,William L. Jones of Chesapeake, Virginia
