Thurman Henry Rogers, 82 of Lillington died Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Emerald Health and Rehab.
Mr. Rogers was born September 9, 1931, in Greensboro to the late Henry Aaron and Josie Collins Rogers. He spent the majority of his life in Harnett County. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Doris Gilchrist Rogers; sister, Sue Rogers Stancil; brother, Cleodis Rogers; three grandchildren, Zachary Harmon, Jackson and Caroline Castle.
He was a graduate of Boone Trail High School, Campbell College, and Wake Forest University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After completing his education, he joined The United States Army. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Revenue after serving over 30 years as a tax auditor.
Mr. Rogers was a life-long member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was a member of the Boone Trail Ruritan Club and Lillington Lion's Club where he received Lion of the Year in 2004. He was an avid gardener and sports fan. Not only did he love participating and watching games, he also enjoyed watching young people develop and grow. He loved people and never met a stranger in any situation. Mr. Rogers was known in the community as a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick Broaddus and Rev. Martin Groover officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Saturday, December 7, 2013 at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home and all other times at the residence of Rachelle Barefoot.
Mr. Rogers is survived by two daughters, Rachelle Barefoot and husband Charles of Dunn and Allison Castle and husband Mike of Fuquay-Varina; Son, Thurman Henry Rogers, Jr. and wife Renee of Apex; two brothers, Eugene Rogers and wife Edna of Sanford, Lawrence Rogers and wife Sue of Spring Lake; sister, Derenda Kelly and husband Stuart of Lillington; 6 grandchildren, Seth Henry Rogers, Abby Lillian Rogers and Heath Wells Rogers, Caden Jackson Castle, Connor Aaron Castle and Chandler Claire Castle; two step-grandchildren, Joey Barefoot and Kim Tart; two step-great grandchildren, Jeremy and Jase Tart and many nieces and nephews.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Rogers to Antioch Baptist Church, the Boone Trail Ruritan Club Benevolence Fund or the Lillington Lion's Club
