Mr. Sam A. Hayes, 73, of Lillington passed away Friday, February 17, 2017 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born in Bunnlevel, the son of the late Sam Doctor and Flora E. Rambeau Hayes. He retired from the Department of Defense at Ft. Bragg with 25 and a half years of service. Sam was a veteran of the US Navy. He was a past Commander of the American Legion in Lillington and also a member of the DAV in Lillington. Sam was loving husband and step father. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Johnson.

Sam is survived by his wife of 40 years, Josephine Searcy Hayes of the home; 2 step-sons, Thomas Myatt of Maryland and Richard Myatt of Pennsylvania; 2 sisters, Ola Raynor of Erwin and Margaret McKinney of Lillington; brother, John Hayes of Lillington; 2 half-sisters, Nellie Smith of Garysburg, NC and Kitty Stephenson of Dunn, NC; half-brother, Stephen Stone of Lillington.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday February 20, 2017 at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Chapel in Lillington with Rev. Ray Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Angier Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 1:00-2:00 PM and other times at the home of Ola Raynor.
