Mr. Roy Hobbs Byrd, Sr., 92, of Bunnlevel passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at his home.

He was born in Bunnlevel, the son of the late Linnie Hobbs and James Caleb Byrd, Sr. Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Daphne McLawhorn Byrd, sisters, Carrie Cade, Ethel Jones, Ina Mae Powell, brothers, Edward Byrd, Hal Byrd, Charles Byrd and James Byrd.

He was the youngest sibling in his family. Roy attended Campbell College and NC State College. During Roy's college career, he proudly served with the US Army in WWII. He was stationed in Europe from 1943-1946. He returned to NC State College graduating in 1947 with a degree in Horticulture. After graduating from college, he returned to the family farm as a fifth generation farmer to follow his passion. He served on the Harnett County Agricultural Committee for many years and also served on the Cape Fear Farm Credit Board of Directors for 21 years. Roy also served on the Cape Fear Christian Academy Board of Directors and the Harnett County Cemetery Association Board of Directors for several years. He was a life long member of Bunnlevel Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and a member of the Church Choir.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 3, 2015 at Bunnlevel Presbyterian Church with Rev. William Pauley and Rev. JoAnne Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington. The family will receive friends at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 P.M. and other times at the Byrd home place.

Roy is survived by his son, R.H. Byrd, Jr. and wife Sherrie of Bunnlevel, daughter, Jenny Byrd Moorefield of Bunnlevel; 4 grandchildren, Sarah Byrd and fiancé Jonathan Temple, James Michael Byrd and wife, Lakean, Christopher Moorefield and Lauren Moorefield; sister, Helen Menius and husband Leonard of Lufkin, TX. A special thank you to his caregivers, Lavonda Locklear, Sherrie Jernigan and Georgianna Williams.
