Mr. Robert Reynolds Mason, Sr., 77, of Lillington died Monday, September 2, 2013 at his home. He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late Wade Clarendon and Hassie Brown Mason. Mr. Mason was a Trooper with the NC Highway Patrol for 25 years in Jones and Lenior, Johnston, and Wayne counties. He also served two terms as Sheriff of Jones County. Mr. Mason returned to live in Harnett County after retirement. He was a US Army veteran and served as a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Mason served as the Grand Master of the Zion Lodge #81 in Trenton. He was Commander of the Clen Newton Post 154 American Legion. Mr. Mason was very instrumental in the formation of the local Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 111 in the Trenton area. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janie Seagroves of Sanford and nephew, Keith Thomas.

Memorial service will be 4:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Spring Hill United Methodist Church in Lillington with Rev. Terry Williams and Rev. Randy Beasley officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at Spring Hill United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Polly McDaniel Mason of Trenton, son, Robert R. Mason, Jr. and wife Heather M. Mason of Herndon, VA, daughter, Anita Mason Shaver and husband Ron Shaver of Browns Summit, NC, step-son, Billy Taylor of Trenton, grandchildren, Robert R. Mason III, Addison Wade Shaver and Elisabeth Margaret Shaver, step-grandson, William Harrison Taylor, 4 sisters, Alva Lee Thomas of Lillington, Libby Mason of Lillington, Kay Upchurch and husband Bennie of Broadway and Faye Upchurch and husband Durward of Lillington, special nieces and nephews, Carlos Bediger, Steve Seagroves, Al Upchurch, Jason Upchurch, Reggie Thomas, Lorie Chambers, Angie Upchurch Jordan and Allison Smith. The family would like to thank the devoted and loving caregivers, Sunnie Stone, Shavaonda Smith, Chelsea Sasser, Angie Groover, Connie Davis, Marsha Thomas and Von Watson. Mr. Mason was married to Janis Bullard Howard of Smithfield and Dolly Thornton of Grantham.
