Obituary

LTC. Phillip Lewis Melvin USAF (Ret.), 80, of Buies Creek passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016 at his home. He was born in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Lewis Dale Melvin and Esther Soravia Melvin. Phillip served multiple tours as a highly decorated Pilot in Vietnam while serving in the US Air Force. After retiring from the military, Phillip started working with Campbell University where he served as the Dean of Student Life and was a professor of Asian History. Phillip served as a President of the Buies Creek Lions Club and was a member of Buies Creek First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Bible study teacher. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Phillip is survived by his wife of 54 years, June Celia Johnson Melvin of the home; sons, Phillip H. Melvin and wife, Kathy of Lillington; David D. Melvin of Lillington; 6 grandchildren, Phillip John Melvin, Jacqueline Nicole Carter, Jeremy Buck Melvin, Jacob Daniel Melvin, Tommy Carter and Kaitlyn Melvin, 4 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, November 4, 2016 at Buies Creek First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Simmons officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Harnett Memorial Park.
