Mr. Norman Franklin Lewis, Jr., 93 of Lillington passed away peacefully on Friday, June 4, 2010 at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington. He was born Feb. 7, 1917 in Dunn, NC, Harnett County, the oldest of 4 children to Norman F. Lewis, Sr. and Verda Stewart Lewis. He graduated from Coats High School . In 1932, Frank moved to Lillington with his family and started a service station and oil delivery business. He served in the Army Air Corp in World War II, the Korean War, and in 1962 as the acting Sgt. Major during the Cuban Missile Crisis at Pope Air Force Base. He later served as Harnett County Civil Defense Director and finished his career as Field Representative for the N.C. County Commissioners' Association, retiring in 1981. Dedicated to his community, he served on the Lillington Town Board and as mayor for five terms. Frank was a member of the Board of Harnett County Correctional Unit, the Harnett County Production Enterprise and the Lillington ABC Board. He was also a Charter Member of the Lillington Rotary Club and a member of the Lillington Masonic Lodge #312. Frank was a member of the Lillington Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and Elder and was named Elder Emeritus. In 2007, he was awarded the Outstanding Older Adult Award by the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina. In addition, Frank was a life-long N.C. State Wolfpack fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lee Harrington Lewis and sister Margaret Bradley. The family wishes to express their extreme gratitude to Dr. John Briggs and staff, the doctors and staff of Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn, Dr. Douglas Leet and the staff at Rex Hospital , Universal Health Care Rehab Center staff, Brookfield Retirement Center Lillington staff and E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center staff for all the love and care they gave Frank. We are also grateful for the special care-givers Sally Murchison and Orlando Heano who were so dedicated to Frank.

Memorial service will be conducted 4:00 pm Monday, June 7, 2010 at Lillington Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. William Goodnight officiating. The burial will be prior to the service at 3:30pm in Harnett Memorial Park with military rites.

The family will host a meal for all in attendance following the service in the church fellowship hall. They will receive friends other times at the home of Frankie and Betty Lewis. Memorials may be made to the Lillington Presbyterian Church Memorial or Scholarship Fund or to the N.C. State Wolfpack Club.

Mr. Lewis is survived by Son: Frankie Lewis and his wife Betty of Lillington; Sisters: Jane McKinney of Lillington and Lynn Helms of Seven Lakes; Grandchildren: Lacey Lewis Bond of Lillington; Norman F. Lewis IV of Newport Beach, CA. Great grandchildren: Chaliss, C.J. and Maleigh Cline
