Mrs. Myrtle Hawley Sykes, 94, of Broadway died Friday, June 24, 2011 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Sanford. She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of the late Edward L. and Catherine Jane McLean Hawley. Mrs. Sykes graduated from Boone Trail School in 1934 and Montreat College in 1940. She was a life-long member of Leaflet Presbyterian Church and served as the church historian. Mrs. Sykes played the piano and organ at Leaflet Presbyterian Church and Broadway Presbyterian Church as well as several other local churches. She taught piano for over 50 years. Mrs. Sykes was a member of a group of local musicians known as the "Junk Band" who entertained at local nursing homes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Franklin Sykes and her sister, Margaret Hawley Leggett.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, June 27, 2011 at Leaflet Presbyterian Church in Broadway. with Rev. Pat Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery. The family will receive friends at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home Sunday, June 26, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 PM.

She is survived by son, Ernest Sykes and wife Pam of Lillington, son, Ronald Sykes of Broadway, son, David Sykes and wife Dorothy of Pinehurst, two grandchildren, Myra Hair and husband Shane of Maryville, TN, Frankie Sykes and wife Rebecca of Sanford, three great-grandsons, Seth Hair, Drew Hair and Easton Sykes.
