Obituary

Mrs. Mary Orpha Walker, 65, of Lillington passed away Friday, July 27, 2018 at her home. She was born in Superior, MT, the daughter of the late Harriet Farnham Horning and Charles Horning. Mary had a sweet disposition and loved singing for friends and family on numerous occasions. She sang with the Seattle Opera Company and the MGM Grande in Las Vegas. Mary served as a music director for many churches during her travels as an active duty military spouse and after husband's retirement. She was a very supportive military wife as indicated by her family receiving the Military Family of the Year at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, TX. Mary and Larry also were declared Honorary Texas Citizens by the Governor of Texas. She worked as an administrative assistant at Central Carolina Community College for over 20 years. Mary was a loving and dedicated mother. She was very active in community affairs prior to her illness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Garrett DeCerce.

Mary is survived by her husband of 34 years, Larry Walker of the home; 2 sons, Matthew Walker of Cary and Michael Walker of the home; step-daughter, Sara Walker Stiger and husband Ed of Wichita, KS; 2 step-grandchildren, Sabrina and McKinley; brother, Charles Horning and wife MaryAnn of Seattle, WA; Evelyn DeCerce of Renton, WA; brothers, Leroy Horning of Vacaville, CA and Peter Horning and wife Edna of Columbia, SC.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday August 5, 2018 at Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mike Armistead officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

The Walker family would like to express a special thank you to Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Church, Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers, organizations and individuals for all the prayers, cards, food and other acts of kindness during Mary's extended illness. The family would also like to thank Transitions Lifecare for all the care and concern given to Mary and the family.
