Marlyn D. Stern, 72, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

Born December 13, 1940, Marlyn grew up in Mitchell, South Dakota and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He graduated in the spring of 1959 as Manual Morse Systems Operator. After 20 years of service and assignments in Turkey, Alaska, the Philippines, Texas, and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his work, he retired in San Antonio, TX where he met his wife. Marlyn married Virginia Medel on May 31, 1975. After graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1986 with a Bachelors degree in accounting, he worked as an auditor for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) until his retirement in 2005.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years Virginia Stern of Lillington, daughter Virginia Gregg (Chris) of Minneapolis, son Jim Stern (Kathy) of Mitchell SD, brother Ray Stern (Sharon Stern) Mitchell SD, grandchildren Julia, Thomas and Kristopher Wrobel all of Minneapolis, Kristen of Sioux Falls SD, James, Katie and Kelsey Stern all of Mitchell SD, 1 Great Grandson Hayden Stern of Mitchell SD.

A Funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 4, 2013 at Memorial Baptist Church, 271 Leslie Campbell Avenue, Buies Creek. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
