Mrs. Margaret "Marge" Nelson McDonald, age 86, of Lillington died on her birthday, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Brookfield Retirement Center in Lillington.

She was born in Minneapolis, MN, the adopted daughter of Charles and Hazel Nelson of Mitchell, SD. She graduated from Mitchell High School and Colorado Women's College in Denver.

While working for the war effort in California, she met her future husband, Mack McDonald of Lillington. From this union, there were born four children.

Marge was very active in the Lillington United Methodist Church, serving as organist for 14 years, youth counselor and life member of the United Methodist Women. She later moved to Chapel Hill where she served as organist at Carrboro United Methodist Church for 8 years.

Marge worked for NC Memorial Hospital and retired in 1989. After retirement, she was an active volunteer at the hospital. In 1996, she returned to Lillington. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Coleman of Lillington, in 2009.

Mrs. McDonald is survived by her son Duane of Leavenworth, KS; two daughters, Leigh Headington of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, and Margaret Pate of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Tim Coleman of Lillington, Sally Adams of Mt. Airy, Rebecca Faircloth of Rolesville and Katherine Milby of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.


The family will receive friends Thursday, June 24, at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, June 25 at Lillington United Methodist Church, followed by a private family burial at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her beloved churches Lillington United Methodist Ch., PO Box 506, Lillington, NC 27546 or Carrboro United Methodist Church, 200 Hillsborough Rd., Carrboro, NC 27510. She loved them both.
