Mr. Lloyd Reid Johnson, 91 of Lillington died peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 1, 2015 after a period of declining health. His wife of 68 years was by his side along with his loving family.

Mr. Johnson was the son of the late Lloyd and Bessie Stokes Johnson and was preceded in death by his brothers Harold and Earl Johnson.

Reid left high school in 1942 for an adventure with his cousin, Berles Johnson. They first traveled north to New York City where they visited Radio City Music Hall and watched the Rockette's perform. They proceeded to Alaska and worked under hard and cold conditions logging enormous trees. He returned home and joined the US Navy for World War II. After serving for 3 years on the USS Josephe Connolly (DE450 destroyer escort) and being stationed in many Pacific Ocean ports, he returned home in 1946. That same year, on September 28th, he married the love of his life, Marjorie Vann.

His work career was endless as he refused to retire. Upon his return from WWII, he worked for several years at Layton Hardware Supply Store in Lillington while farming part time. He left to return to his faming roots on a fulltime basis with his brother Harold and lived for many years on the Bessie Brown farm before acquiring the Vann Place, his wife's childhood home and farm. The two families rented land with tobacco as the major cash crop. They also grew corn, soybeans, cotton and tended large vegetable gardens. During the winter Reid worked as an electrician, often at Fort Bragg with his brother Harold and friend Tommy Patrick. Upon retiring from farming he worked for the Harnett County Water Department and afterwards with Bruce Shelly Construction Company. After retiring again, he worked for Green South landscaping.

Reid's legacy also includes over 60 years as a Mason of Angier Masonic Lodge # 686 and over 50 years as a member of the Mystic Shrine, which supports the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He also supported the Neill's Creek Ruritan Club for a number of years.

Reid was a lifetime faithful member of Neill's Creek Baptist Church where he served in various capacities, including head usher. Along with his wife, he was the caretaker of the church for 37 years.

As a young man he hunted often with his father and friends. Later in life, as time permitted, he enjoyed fox hunting and listening to his dogs run. His true love was his family and their home was a constant gathering site for family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 4:00 pm Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Neill's Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Turner and Rev. Jeff Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Veteran and Masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 2:30-4:00 pm prior to the service in the church sanctuary.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Marjorie Vann Johnson. Son, Timothy Johnson and his wife Denise of Lillington. Daughters: Benita Messer and her husband Larry of Coats, Teresa Johnson of Raleigh. Sisters: Carol Hart of Fuquay-Varina; Gladys Woodall and Ruth Gregory, both of Lillington. Brother, Carl Johnson of Lillington. Grandchildren: Jessica Woody, Myrandi Walker, Dallas Messer and Haley Goins. Great grandchildren: Gavin, Maddox, Banks, and Jett Woody, Ashley Walker.
