Lee Winfred Cummings, 88 of Lillington passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 at the NC State Veterans Nursing Home.

Mr. Cummings was a native of Harnett Co. He was the son of the late CC "Lum" Cummings and Mary Lou Patterson Cummings. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Worth, Willard, Wayne and JC Jake Cummings; 3, sisters, Willie Mae Rosser, Winnie Cummings, and Jeanette Thymes.

Mr. Cummings was a lifetime member of Raven Rock Presbyterian Church, where he has served in numerous leadership positions. For several years he was a teacher for the boys Sunday School Class, S.S. Superintendent, Deacon, elder and a choir member until his health failed. On May 31, 2009 he was honored in a special ceremony by the women of the church for his service of the church, his country and the community. Later that year he was recognized by the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina at the Dennis Wicker Center in Sanford and given a certificate of appreciation as an outstanding member of the church. He was a veteran of WWII and service in the Pacific Theater as a Naval Parachute Rigger. He was always active in the school and the community. He coached Little League at Boone Trail School, served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Boone Trail Emergency Service. He was a longtime member of the Boone Trail Recreation Club and the American Legion. In 1984 he received a community service award for unselfish dedication to the Boone Trail Community. He served as assistant Scout Master and Explorer Adviser for Boy Scout Troop 762 for 41 years. He was a life member of the Order of the Arrow. In 1981 he received a leadership citation for explorers Adviser of the year. The order of the Arrow was presented to him by the Occoneechee Council at a ceremony at the McKinnon Center in Raleigh. He grew up as a farmer, worked at Saco Lowell in Sanford and retired from Morganite Inc. in Dunn.

Mr. Cummings is survived by his loving wife Selma Lett Cummings to whom he was married for 68 years. 2 daughters, Linda C. Temple and husband Bobby, Bonnie Thomas and Husband Donnie; a son, Ret. Col. Winfred Scott Cummings and wife Vickie; 5 grand children, Jeremy Thomas and wife Stephanie, Tina Temple Rawls and husband Josh, Mary Temple Cook and husband Brad, Hank and Lauren Cummings; 6 great grand children, Chloe Thomas, Maylon and Makenzie Rawls and Emma, Brayden and Carly Cook.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday, October 20, 2013 at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 3:00 P.M. Monday, October 21, 2013 at Raven Rock Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Bill Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
