Lawrence “Larry” Roth Schiemann, 84, of Lillington, North Carolina, formerly of Ashland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday September 28, 2026.

Larry was born on March 16, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Lawrence and Elsie Schiemann and grew up in Wickliffe. He served in the United States Navy before attending Ashland College, where he met the love of his life, Lisa. They married on August 23, 1969, and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

An artist and educator, Larry earned his master's degree in ceramics from Northern Illinois University in 1973. He opened a pottery studio in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, before returning to Ashland University, where he first served as Alumni Director and later taught ceramics from 1988 until his retirement in 2015. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and later served as an advisor.

Pottery remained an important part of Larry's life long after retirement. He continued working with clay until January 2026. Art was also a shared family interest. His daughter Cori is an artist working across many mediums, and his son Matthew is a master ceramicist and luthier.

Larry and Lisa raised their three children, Stacy, Cori and Matthew, in Streetsboro, Ohio, before moving to Ashland in 1988. A quiet man with a dry sense of humor, Larry enjoyed delivering well-timed one-liners and dad jokes, usually accompanied by a smile and a quiet chuckle. His seven grandchildren especially enjoyed that side of their grandfather.

Music was another important part of Larry's life. He enjoyed singing and participated in his church choirs for many years.

Larry is survived by his wife, Lisa; his three children, Stacy Schiemann, Cori Schiemann, and Matthew Schiemann and his wife, Makenzie; his seven grandchildren, Tyler, Caila, Micah, Sophia, Wyatt, Zayah and Connor; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Jerry Fleece and LeeAnn and Michael Contenza; and extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Lillington Presbyterian Church in North Carolina, on Saturday, October 3 at 2:00 pm with refreshments following at the Atkins House on West Ivy St. directly following the service. A second celebration of life will be held at Peace Lutheran Church in Ashland, Ohio on October 10th at 11:00 am with lunch to follow in the fellowship hall. Larry had one special request for his memorial services: bright colors, Hawaiian shirts and cheerful clothing rather than traditional funeral attire. Family and friends are encouraged to honor his wishes as they gather to remember him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harnett County Food Bank or the United Way of Ashland County, Ohio.
