Kathryn Campbell King, 67, passed away on July 16, 2026. Kathryn was born on February 8, 1959, to the late Robert L. King and Catherine Campbell King of Buies Creek, NC. Kathryn was the granddaughter of Leslie H. Campbell, the second President of Campbell University, and Ora Green Campbell. She was the great-granddaughter of J.A. Campbell and Cornelia P. Campbell. J.A. Campbell was Founder of Campbell University.
Kathryn is survived by her devoted husband, Maxie Gleaton, who cared for, advocated for, and loved her for more than 35 years. During her battle with ALS, Maxie was her safe-haven, supporting and encouraging her dreams and passions until the end. Kathryn is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth (Beth) King Reed (Ramsey); her nephews, Ramsey Taylor Reed (Lindsey) and Robert Campbell Reed; her great-nieces, McKensie Campbell Reed and Emmy Elaine Reed; and nephews by marriage, Robert G. Reed, David R. Reed, Eric M. Reed, Gregory S. Reed, and their families.
Kathryn earned her bachelor's degree in Interior Design from East Carolina University. She completed her formal education by earning her master's degree from North Carolina State University.
Kathryn loved her family and her community. She generously shared her talents, skills and financial resources through philanthropic work and the care and adoption of animals. She had a passion for housing and interior design which she poured into her business – Design Market. She enthusiastically shared her knowledge of furniture and decorating with her staff, vendors and clients. They were her friends who enabled her to fulfill her dream.
Kathryn was the president of the Harnett County Historical Society Foundation for many years. She was tireless in her work to restore the J.A. Campbell House and her efforts to maintain the legacy of the Campbell family.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 11:00 at Memorial Baptist Church with Ed Beddingfield officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. 271 Leslie Campbell Avenue, Buies Creek, NC 27506. The service will be accessible by live stream at memorialbcnc.org .
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the near future in Pinehurst, NC.
