Mr. Joseph "Joe" Mallie Smith, 95, of Fuquay-Varina passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington. He was born in Chatham County, the son of the late Mallie and Ola Gilchrist Smith. Joe was a US Navy veteran serving in WWII. He graduated from NC State University in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Agronomy. Joe spent his entire career as a seed analyst with FCX in Statesville. He retired after 36 years of service. After retiring, Joe moved back to Harnett County and enjoyed spending time outdoors. Joe enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a man of strong faith who showed great patience. Joe was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Smith; brothers, J.C. Smith, Ben Smith, Clifton Smith and sisters, Inez McKinney and Elouise Smith.

Joe is survived by his wife of 71 years, Annie Lee Weathers Smith of the home; daughter, Judy Hall and husband, Cress of Carolina Shores, NC; daughter, Laurie Perez of Randleman, NC; 5 grandchildren, Douglas Smith and wife, Anna; Matthew Hall and wife, Juawana; Rebekah Nickerson and husband, Joey; Philip Perez, Benjamin Perez; 4 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Evan, Caleb and Landon; sister, Mary Rosser of Sanford; brother, Junior Smith and wife, Doris Jean of Lillington; nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Christian Light Christian Church in Fuquay-Varina with Rev. Jimmy Elliott and Rev. Joey Nickerson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 10:00-11:00 AM and other times at the home.
