John Waylon Porter, Sr. 79 went to be with our Lord and Savior Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

A native of Harnett Co. he was the son of the late Ernie And Beulah Lanier Porter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margie Moore Porter; 2 brothers, Willard and Rex Porter; 2 sisters, Eunice Mason and Marie Clark.

Waylon was a devoted husband, daddy and grandpa. A founder of Lillington Church of God, where he has been an active trustee, superintendent, and did any job that was needed. He was quite a character. He loved and enjoyed life. Many years were spent singing gospel music with his wife in churches, rest homes and where ever the Lord led them. Waylon loved his family, guitars, country music and good country food. He had a passion for Nascar, Ford Racing and fast cars. "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" was what he waited for from week to week during race season. He spent many retirement days watching his favorite TV program "Heat of the Night." Waylon was awarded "Recycle Go Green" by Harnett County. He retired from Winn-Dixie Warehouse, Gould and Goodrich and Harnett County Landfill.

Waylon is survived by 2 daughters, Kathy Wood and husband Barry of Sanford and Debra McCauley of Broadway; a son, John Porter, Jr. and wife Pam of Cameron; brother, Lee Porter and wife Betty of Lillington; Sister-in-law, Sandy Porter of Lillington; 5 grandchildren, Ryan Collins and wife JoAnn of Lillington, Amanda McGarry and husband Nick of Aberdeen, Steve McCauley and wife Tiffany of Broadway, Robin McCauley and wife Megan of Florida, John Porter III and wife Felisha of Lillington; 8 great grandchildren and many nieces , nephews and extended family.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 18, 2014 at Lillington Church of God with Reverends Keith Fox, Kenneth Boyd, Alton Childers and Lee McKinney officiating. Ashley Porter will be doing the eulogy. Burial will follow at Harnett Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home and other times at the home of Waylon.

Waylon touched the lives of many and will be missed. Remember the times he shared your laughter or just sit and talked or picked a little guitar. He was a kind and compassionate man to everyone. His full of life character would want everyone to come celebrate his memory. He is rejoicing with the Lord and reuniting with his wife and so many that have gone before him to Heaven . So come on out and celebrate Waylon's "Victory at the Finish Line." The checkered flag symbolizes "the end of the race." The checkered flag has dropped for Waylon. His race is won. His sponsor is our Lord and Savior. "Procession weaving allowed to keep heat in the tires but cars caught speeding leaving the church have to go to the rear of the procession."
