Mr. Jack Lee Stewart, age 82, of Buies Creek died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Jack was the son of the late Jesse Stewart and Isabell Mitchell Stewart. Jack was born and reared on a farm in Buies Creek, Harnett County, NC. He graduated from Campbell College, now Campbell University. After graduation, Jack played professional baseball for two years with the Philadelphia Athletics organization, one year with the old Tobacco State League.

During WWII, he was drafted into the US Army, and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. He married Catherine Camp Stewart, with whom he had two daughters, Sheila and Susan.

In 1956, Jack joined the NC Highway Patrol, and served in Roberson, Hertford and Gaston counties. Then, after residing in Las Vegas several years, Jack returned to Buies Creek. In 1985, he married Margaret Ellis, and they resided in Buies Creek until his death Wednesday.

Jack is survived by his wife Margaret, stepson Justin Ellis of the home, and his daughter Sheila Trexler and husband Don Rowe of San Diego. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan of Palm Springs.

Jack wanted to honor Dr. Christopher Stewart, a graduate of East Carolina School of Medicine and the son of Larry and Gayle Stewart of Buies Creek, by donating his body for medical research.

A memorial service will be held at Buies Creek First Baptist Church on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Michael Simmons and Rev. Aaron Jackson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.
