Mrs. Iva W. Newton, age 90, of Buies Creek died Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington. She was born in Harnett county on June 10, 1920 to Hughie and Alice Wester of Buies Creek. Iva was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alvin C. Newton, son, John Carlton, sister, Thelma Jackson and grandson Barrett Howard.
Iva was foremost and always a devoted "farmer's wife" and Mother. A life long member of Buies Creek First Baptist Church she served many years as Nursery Director. She was a dedicated member of the Harnett County Farm Bureau Board for 29 years. Her support of education to farming families was demonstrated by her distribution of apples to the county's bus drivers each new school year and numerous hand stitched quilts that were auctioned at the State Convention to help fund the R. Flake Shaw and Harnett County scholarship programs.
An avid gardener and quilter, she was well known for her lovely yard, hand stitched baby blankets, beautiful quilts, chicken pastry and biscuits. She loved serving others as she spent many long hours sitting by bedsides in her role as a private duty nurse.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011, 3:00 PM at Buies Creek First Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Michael Simmons, Rev. Dr. John Rogers, and Dr. Dwayne Green will be officiating

Burial will follow the service at Buies Creek Cemetery

The family will receive friends at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 7:00-9:00 PM

Survivors include: Sons- David Newton, Paul Wayne Newton and wife Gail, Elwood Newton and wife Frances, all of Buies Creek; Daughters: Joyce Bruce and husband Dennis of Clayton, Linda Young and husband Michael of Angier; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.
