Mrs. Helen Walker Matthews, age 89, of Buies Creek died Monday, April 16, 2012 at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. She was born in Mecklenburg Co., VA, the daughter of the late Aus Lee and Bessie Wilkerson Walker. Mrs. Matthews was the oldest member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She retired from Campbell University after several years of service. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Woodrow Matthews.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday April 18, 2012 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Angier with Dr. Rick Jefferds officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Angier. The family will receive friends at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home Tuesday, April 17, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 PM and other times at her home.

She is survived by daughter, Hilda Weaver and husband Gene of Angier; daughter, Marie Matthews of Benson; daughter, Cathy Matthews of Benson; son, Tommy Matthews of Angier; son, Johnny Matthews and wife Diane of Willow Springs, NC, son, Jimmy Matthews and wife Debbie of Willow Springs, NC; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.
