Obituary

George Henry Pounds III died at home, May 28, 2016, two months shy of his 88th birthday.

George was predeceased by his parents, Gladys Brown Pounds and George H. Pounds of Jasper, Alabama and his twin brother, Jimmy Pounds of Birmingham, Alabama.

At George's request, there will be no visitation or memorial service.

George played center of the football team for Walker County High School in the late 1940's, earning his treasured letter sweater with three stripes. After high school, he scrimmaged with big name colleges in Alabama and Louisiana, before earning a BS degree in Chemistry from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi in 1950.
His entire career was spent in the textile industry. In the 1960's, George was one of the thirteen people chosen to start up a new polyester plant in Shelby, N.C. The new company, Fiber Industries, became his passion and his focus for the remainder of his working life. While plant manager of the Salisbury Fiber Industries plant, he received his MBA from Wake Forest University.

George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Lynn Husbands Pounds and four daughters; Ann Lampron of Denver, NC, Amy Herman of Conover, NC, Lea Pounds Holder of Winston-Salem, NC and Meg Pounds of Cary, NC, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

At a later date, the immediate family will scatter George's ashes, along with those of his last and best Brittany Spaniel, Jeff, at a favorite place.

For the record: George ended his life the way he lived his life – with determination, persistence and tenacity.

For the family: Anyone wishing to remember Poppa, he would tell you to enjoy a round of golf, remembering him on the 19th hole, take the dogs for a good run and never say, "I can't."
