Mrs. Ellen Moseley Sikes, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.
Mrs. Sikes was a member of the Lillington Baptist Church and sang in the choir there for many years. She was a retired professor from Campbell University where she taught in the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business for almost 40 years, beginning in 1967. While at Campbell, she was honored as Outstanding Faculty Advisor; one of 12 chosen nationwide. In 1994, Mrs. Sikes received the Teaching Excellence Award which was presented at the Annual Trustee Luncheon that year. Remarks in the presentation included the following: "Mrs. Sikes has gained the respect of students, faculty, and administration for her many outstanding contributions and achievements. Campbell University takes great pride in recognizing Ellen M. Sikes as the recipient of this award." While at Campbell, she demonstrated continued leadership and hard work as advisor of the Society for the Advancement of Management Club, the largest club on the Campbell campus at the time. The $200,000 student lounge in the new School of Business was largely funded by, and dedicated to, the SAM campus chapter.
Mrs. Sikes was a living example of the characteristics of strength, determination, courage, competence and staunch support and defense of those she loved.
Mrs. Sikes grew up in Gaffney, SC, the youngest daughter of Mr. George W. Moseley and Zora Melton Moseley. She graduated from Gaffney High School in 1943 and then went on to graduate from Limestone College in Gaffney. She met and married her husband of over 50 years, Charles Van Sikes, while teaching in Shelby, NC. Mrs. Sikes received her Master's in Business Administration from University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1968.
Survivors are sons Dr. Charles Van Sikes, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Sanford and Dr. Mark Moseley Sikes and wife Susan of Charlotte; daughter Laura Susan Sikes of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren Dr. Charles Van Sikes III and his wife, Brooke of Mooresville; Dr. Scott Sikes and his wife Afton of Wilmington, Carter Sikes, age 10 of Charlotte; great grandchildren, Leah Caroline Sikes, age 8 and Kate Brooklyn Sikes, age 4 of Mooresville, and Hudson Crew Sikes, age 18 months of Wilmington.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 2:00 P.M., with visitation at 1:00 P.M. at Lillington Baptist Church with Dr. John Rodgers, Dr. Michael Cogdill and Rev. Jeff Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home, Lillington.
