Elizabeth "Lib" Gail Yow Whittington, 77 of Sanford passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014.

Lib was born June 4, 1937 in Harnett Co. to the late Frank Burton and Mallie Belle Lucas Yow.

Lib got her business degree from Campbell College and continued her education at East Carolina University. She was Mrs. Central Carolina in 1957 and on the homecoming court for both Campbell College and East Carolina University. She retired from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she was in charge of recruiting physicians and health care providers. She was very involved in local and state politics. She was chairman of the Cumberland County Democratic Women and active in the Fayetteville Exchange Club. She was a former member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church and a current member of Lillington Baptist Church. She loved cooking, spending time with family and trips to Holden Beach. Her joy in life was serving others, be it family or friends.

Lib is survived by 2 children, Lisa Whittington Stewart and husband Jimmy of Carolina Lakes and Doug Whittington and wife Barrie of Medina, OH; 2 brothers, Melvin Yow of Lillington and Sammy Yow and wife Darlene of Fayetteville; 3 grandchildren, Trey Stewart, Mallie and David Whittington; 4 nieces, Gloria Eller, Diane Stewart, Barbara Newton and Erin Yow; 1 nephew, Travis Yow.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Lillington Baptist with Rev. John Rogers and Dr. John Hedgepeth officiating. Burial will follow at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday September 26, 2014 at O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home.
