Mrs. Anne Johnson Altvater Byrd, age 84, died November 2, 2009 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mrs. Byrd was born December 24, 1924 in Harnett County to Alton Glenn and Mary Green Johnson. She was educated in the Harnett County schools and Campbell College and graduated from Women's College, now UNC-G, in 1945 with a degree in music education.
Anne lived in Greensboro, North Carolina from 1948 until 1998, when she returned to live in Buies Creek with her husband, R.M. (Mac) Byrd. During her months of declining health, she resided at Loyalton of Greensboro. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Betty Johnson Cheek and Mary Byrd Johnson Altvater and her first husband H. Mark Altvater. She is survived by her husband, Mac Byrd and by her three children Elizabeth A. Lambeth and husband, Rick of Durham; Marcia A. Hamilton and husband, Keith of N. Topsail Beach; and Mark Altvater and wife, Kristie of Summerfield. She is also survived by a brother, William A. Johnson of Lillington; her seven grandchildren, Anne Elizabeth Lambeth, Scott Davis Lambeth, Katherine Lambeth Zavodni, Jason Anthony Rivera, Kelly Lucero Rivera, Lindsey Michelle Altvater and Erin Elaine Altvater; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Lambeth Roberts, Sean Michael Rivera and Logan Michael Rivera.
A service for Mrs. Byrd will be held at Memorial Baptist Church, Buies Creek, NC on Friday, November 6 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Anyone wishing to honor Mrs. Byrd's memory is invited to do so by making a contribution to Memorial Baptist Church, 217 Leslie Campbell Ave., Buies Creek, North Carolina or to a charity of one's choice.
