Waymon Weaver Byrd

February 16, 1928

Waymon Weaver Byrd died Thursday, July 4th.  He was born February 16, 1928 in Harnett County, NC to the late Waymon Melvin and Emily Mae Weaver Byrd.  Waymon was predeceased by his brother Leonard Gerald (Bobby) Byrd and an infant daughter Connie Lynn Byrd.  

Waymon was a U.S. Navy veteran serving at the conclusion of WWII.  He spent his working life as a carpenter (19 years) and later as a teacher of carpentry at Fuquay-Varina Consolidated School and later at Fuquay-Varina High School (23 years). 

He was a skilled woodworker who used his talents to help many in his Buies Creek community including the construction of several Habitat for Humanity homes.  He also served his community in the Buies Creek Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was its last surviving charter member.  He was also a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church and was actively involved in its construction and ministry.  

Waymon’s many interests included his family, church and community, camping, photography, wood working, the North Carolina mountains and the growing of Fraser fir Christmas trees.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth Tysinger Byrd; his daughters Gale Byrd Compton (King) of Lumberton, NC; Julie Ann Byrd of Angier; Wendy Byrd Buchanan (Chuck) of Meadows of Dan, VA; granddaughters Cayce Compton Taft (Marshall), Emily Wilbourne Satzger (Rob), Colleen and Molly Buchanan; great-grandchildren Madelyn and Lela Taft, Graham and Philip Satzger.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, July 14 at 3 pm at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek.  Following the service the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

The family would like to thank Community Homecare & Hospice, the staff of Oak Hill Living Center, and Doctors Making House Calls for their care.
