June Celia (Johnson) Melvin

Ms. June Celia Johnson Melvin, 84, of Buies Creek, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2019.

Celia was born December 22, 1935 in a farmhouse in Harnett County to the late David Willard Johnson and Bernetta Brown Johnson.  She graduated from Buies Creek School and then attended Campbell College for accounting.  Afterwards, she married Phillip Melvin whose Air Force career took them and their children all over the world.  They came back to Buies Creek to retire in 1981.  She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.  

Celia helped establish the library at Buies Creek First Baptist Church and did lots of volunteering in the church’s local outreach and ministries.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 3 pm at Buies Creek First Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Sowers presiding. The burial will follow in Harnett Memorial Park.

Celia was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip L. Melvin; son, Phillip H. Melvin; and brother, Douglas Johnson.

She is survived by her son, David D. Melvin; six grandchildren, Phillip John Melvin (Ariel), Jeremy Buck Melvin, Jacob Daniel Melvin (Anna), Kaitlyn June Melvin, Jackie Carter and Tommy Carter; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Amelia, Layla, Michael and Lilah; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Melvin; two sisters, Barbara Brown and Carolyn King; sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson; brother-in-law, Maurice King and many nieces and nephews she loved dearly.   

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from 2 to 2:45 pm in the church’s Fellowship Hall.   

The family would like to thank Cynthia Curtis, Robin Butler and the staffs at both Central Harnett Hospital and Harnett Woods Nursing and Rehab for the loving care they provided to Celia.
