Retired US Army SGM/Reverend Glenn Raymond “Pappy” Thatcher, passed away early Saturday morning, June 29, 2019 surrounded by his family.
Glenn was born July 31, 1928 in southern Ohio’s coal mining country to the late George Raymond and Ruth Dress Thatcher. He enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country in WWII and served with a minesweeper team in the Pacific. After his discharge, he committed to the US Marine Corps and when that term was up, he joined the US Army where he served for the next 35 years. While in the Army, “Pappy” had multiple tours in Vietnam serving in the 5th Special Forces Group. Amongst his many awards, he received the Silver and Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. After the military, Glenn became a Church of God minister and, along with his wife Myrtle, they served as co-chaplains for both Betsy Johnson and Harnett Regional Hospitals.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at 11:30 am at Duncan Church of God with Rev. Ricky Jones presiding. The burial will follow at Westview Cemetery with military honors.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents George and Ruth Thatcher; sons Randy Joseph Thatcher and Robert Mitchell Thatcher; and brother Dale Edward Thatcher.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle June Thatcher; his children Glendale, Joe, Pat, Terry, Scott, Torre, Thomas, Susan, Katherine, and April; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his brother-in-arms J.D. Holland and wife, Nancy.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10-11:30 AM at Duncan Church of God.
