Dr. Bruce B. Blackmon

Dr. Bruce B. Blackmon of Buies Creek entered peacefully into eternity January 8, 2017. He grew up in Buies Creek, received his education at Campbell Junior College, NC State University, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. In 1952, he was delighted when a carload of Buies Creekians drove to Wilmington, NC, to ask him to come home to be their doctor. He did. Over the next 70 years, he took care of the people, and the people took care of him. Oh how he loved Buies Creek!

Dr. Blackmon was a servant of God, husband, father, grandfather, doctor, writer, inventor, friend, advocate, visionary, confidant, and storyteller. His house was always full of people, laughter, and love. He welcomed strangers into his home, and they left as friends.

Deep involvement in the life of his beloved community defined the life of Dr. Blackmon, supporting his church, the fire department, and Campbell University. He served on various medical boards at the local and state level and was instrumental in developing a county mental health center. His countless hours were spent well and with a servant’s heart. He was a four-time recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

A visionary and advocate for making things better for future generations, Dr. Blackmon developed and encouraged growth endowment funds for churches, educational institutions, and municipalities. His commitment to nature and conservation prompted him, at age 88, to plant a pine forest to be harvested in 35 years. Dr. Blackmon believed in making the world a better place, and he left the world a better place. He would be the first to say his greatest endowment was his grandchildren.

Dr. Blackmon is survived by his children: Drs. Annette and Joe Burke of Lumberton; Elizabeth and Bruce Jobe of Lumberton; Bruce and Lyn Blackmon of Charlotte; Juanita and Matt Lojko of Greensboro; Linda and Dr. Eric Bourhill of Callaway, VA; and Diane and Earl Jones of Coats; grandchildren, whom he affectionately described as “the stars” in his life: Andy Burke (and Ashley), Ben Burke, Bryan Jobe, Katye Jobe, Chris Blackmon (and wife, Christina), Michael Blackmon (and wife, Katie), David Lojko (and Melody), Layton Bourhill, Lida Bourhill, and Celia Bourhill; and his nieces, Cathy Vail and Anna Vail Strickland. Dr. Blackmon was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 62 years, Lelia Lawrence Blackmon, his parents, Junius Fulton Blackmon and Katye Hatcher Blackmon, and his sister Bradeene Blackmon Vail.

The Blackmon family members extend their deepest appreciation to the caregivers who have been so important to their father. Thank you to Vanessa Hammonds who was an important and gentle attendant in the final days. And, with more love than they can express in words, the family embraces Jen Henderson, who for nearly eight years, cared for “Pop” and all who gathered around him.

A service celebrating the life of Dr. Blackmon will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Memorial Baptist Church, Buies Creek. Visitation with the family will follow. The family will have a private interment service at Buies Creek Cemetery.
