Obituary

Deloris Mae Bretzke Flanagan, age 91, died January 30, 2017 at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh after a brief illness.

Deloris was born in Comal County, Texas the daughter of the late Samuel Charles and Etelka Irma Zipp Bretzke. Mrs. Flanagan met her husband John in Austin, Texas after he returned from his naval service following WWII. They married in November, 1947 and lived in Austin, Odessa, and Dallas. Mr. Flanagan died while in Dallas and Deloris stayed in Dallas for over 30 years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Linda Gail Flanagan in 1973 and her brother Samuel Carroll Bretzke.

Deloris graduated from Seguin High School and attended the University of Texas in Austin where she earned a B. A. Degree in bacteriology. She was employed as a laboratory technician in both Austin and Odessa, then left to be a fulltime homemaker and to care for her two children, Jim and Linda.

In March of 2011, Deloris moved to Cary NC and lived for three years with her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Beth Flanagan. For the last two and one-half years she has lived at Morningside of Raleigh, an assisted living facility, where she made friends, participated in outings, played bingo, and enjoyed many other activities, especially those involving art or music.

In addition to her son, Deloris is survived by her sister Ruth Mischnick of Des Plaines, Illinois. Five nieces: Carrie de Lemos (Steve) and Deborah Kilchrist (Shawn) of Texas; Ruth Kay Beagle (Paul) of Oregon; Beth Whitaker (Josh) of Dallas and Susan Parsley (Phillip) of Savannah, Georgia. Four nephews, Mike Mischnick of Illinois and Joe, John and Mike Roberts. Sisters-in-law, Virginia Flanagan and Billie Morgan both of Dallas.

Deloris enjoyed being a grandmother to Beth’s children, Rebecca West and Angela Holbrook; great grandchildren, Nicholas Tasios, Rachel Tasios, Kasey West, Amy Horton and Zoe Holbrook; great great granddaughter, Elena Tasios.

A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27607 with Rev. John Saxon officiating.
