Obituary

Mr. T. Gerald Howell, 72, of Fuquay-Varina passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at Wake Medical Center in Cary from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was born at his childhood home in Harnett County, the son of the late Daniel Tyree Howell and Velma McCauley Howell. Gerald graduated from LaFayette High School in 1963 where he was a four year letterman in baseball and basketball. After high school, he graduated with an Associates Degree in Accounting from Hardbarger’s Business College in Raleigh where he was recognized as the outstanding student in accounting. He married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Spence in 1968. Gerald served in the US Army Reserve National Guard for 6 years. He began his business career at Carolina Lightweight Aggregate in Lillington. Gerald continued his career with Duplan Texturing in Lilington, where he worked as controller. He then pursued a career in farming locally and as a tobacco warehouseman in Claxton, GA. Gerald then became co-owner and manager of Planter’s Tobacco Warehouse in Fuquay-Varina while continuing to farm. In the mid 1990’s, Gerald moved on to operate a pine straw and mulch business at Tee Top Farms in Harnett County while becoming actively involved in real estate development with Curr-Well Developments, LLC. He continued to pursue his love of farming in recent years by growing various produce which was sold locally through the Produce Box in Raleigh. Throughout his working career, Gerald maintained an entrepreneurial spirit in all of his business ventures. Gerald was an avid golfer, beginning to play at Sippihaw Golf Course in Fuquay-Varina in his mid 20’s and later became a charter and life long member of Bentwinds Golf and C.C. in Fuquay-Varina. He and Phyllis enjoyed spending time at their mountain home at Olde Mill Golf and C.C. in Laurel Fork, VA where he was also a member. Gerald was best known for his trademark cigar and love of Eastern NC BBQ.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 48 years, Phyllis Spence Howell of the home; son, Currie Tee Howell and wife, Shannon Thomas Howell of Angier; 2 granddaughters, Madilyn Claire and Emilee Grace of Angier; sister, Jewell H. Senter and husband, Wayne of Fuquay-Varina; and dog, Homer.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, January 13, 2017 at Baptist Grove Church in Fuquay-Varina with Rev. Ben Pearce, Rev. Paul Jones and Rev. Joe Cockrell officiating. A private graveside service will be held on the family farm at a later date. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the church fellowship hall and Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 PM at the home of Jewell and Wayne Senter.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in Gerald’s name to the charity of one’s choice.
